A Christmas guide to Incendio recordings: Christmas is coming, Christmas is coming! We hope youll consider letting Incendio music be part of the gift-giving festivities. To that end, here is a guide as well as links, for gifts for the first-time listener as well as longtime fans - there are Incendio-related solo recordings as well. The full text with working links can be found at: incendioband.fanbridge/campaigns/show.php?id=1140468&sid=127492120 Misterioso (2000) Our first CD, written and recorded in 1999. This initially was a melding of Jims writing style with Liza and JPs production chops. Then Jim asked Liza and JP to write some tunes, and then co-wrote some tunes with the pair. It quickly grew beyond what we had envisioned it could be! Includes Incendio staples Luna and Jaco y Paco and features Joe Shotwell (drums), Nicole Falzone (drums and percussion), and Novi Novog (viola). Illumination (2001) Our second CD had a more difficult birth. The record company asked us to go in a more modern (for the time) direction, with synths and loops. This direction was not embraced by the entire band and caused some consternation, but we moved forward nonetheless. We finally came up with a forward-thinking, world-influenced CD and prepped it for a fall 2001 release. Then the terrible tragedy of 9/11 occurred. We had some middle-eastern elements in our music from our very first CD and some middle-eastern-themed artwork, so there was trepidation about its release and reception. It was eventually released later that fall, and did hit the Billboard New Age charts, but for the band it will always quietly carry the weight of its time and circumstance. Features Joe Shotwell (drums), Nicole Falzone (percussion), David Garza (sitar) and Steve Marsh (flute). This includes Illumination and Vamos Ya. Intimo (2003) By 2003, the band had gotten some national attention via CD sales and our touring. We felt we were a good team that could get great things going, but our record company was not in great shape and could not do a third CD despite the minor success of Illumination. So we just went full indie - drums in the living room, percussion in the kitchen, lets just record this sucker live off the floor, no frills, no synths, no nuthin. And thus was born possibly our most popular CD. In contrast to the first two CDs, it was recorded in a week, with live bass, drums and percussion, and the guitars overdubbed in two days (to replace the direct guitars with which the original tracks were recorded). It was a mix of Incendio tunes, Jim Stubblefield tunes (that the band had already been playing for several years but never recorded), and some tunes written just for that CD. At the time this CD kind of saved us as a band, proving to us that our music did touch people and that we should forge ahead. This collection includes the popular Tango para Abel as well as an early cornerstone of the Incendio sound, Jims Rhythm of the Heart, composed in 1993. Incendio (2003) We were then signed by New World Music out of the UK. We wanted this CD to be the culmination of everything we had recorded and experienced. To this day, this CD has the most intricate full band arrangements as well as the most over-the-top guitar playing. This recording went into Costco and Borders and a few other important retail outlets on its release and thus got a lot of coverage which was really welcomed and helpful. Joe and Nicole once again appeared, as did Charlie Bisharat (violin). Highlights include Duelo a la Muerte as well as the opening tune, Black Opal. Dia y Noche (2005) Certainly the proving ground of any band is the live CD. The core Incendio trio all had their faves: Exit Stage Left by Rush, Band of Gypsys by Jimi Hendrix, The Whos Live at Leeds. If its recorded well and its the right audience, a live CD will always contain that special extra factor that the studio CD will not have. To hedge our bet, we recorded at two different venues: the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Center for the larger band with guests, and the regular quintet for our second appearance at the Strawberry Festival in Yosemite. We also filmed the performances (which, surprisingly, had never been done at Strawberry) for the companion live DVD. In listening to both, we found each had different strengths. The Strawberry performances were infused with the manic energy of pushing ourselves for a large crowd that wasnt that familiar with our music. The Thousand Oaks show, by contrast, was more of a hometown love-fest (and longer show thereby accommodating a more sedate performance) with more intricate songs as well as guests. So we decided, why decide? Lets put out the best from both shows, thus birthing Dia y Noche. This was the last CD featuring the original quintet, which again included Joe on drums and Nicole on percussion. Also, our Thousand Oaks show featured guests Lisa Lynne, Roger Espinoza, and Scott Breadman. Seduction (2006) By 2006, both Joe Shotwell and Nicole Falzone had left Incendio - Joe (permanently) by moving to Napa, and Nicole (temporarily) to work on a variety of new projects. Many situations arose from this: more guitar trio gigs, the need to find other drummers and percussionists, etc. We wrote this CD with the idea that had been an early goal of our original record company - to see us cross over into the smooth jazz charts. We got Dave Karasony and Eric Marienthal from the Rippingtons to play on a few tracks, thanks to our pal Scott Breadman (another Rippington) who went on to play with us for two years. Later in the recording process, we brought in the amazing drummer Tom Brechtlein (from Chick Corea, Robben Ford and many others), who also went on to play with the live band over the next few years. We are immensely proud of this record - we never went FULLY smooth-jazz on it, but came dang close and are very happy with the balance we struck. However, our label at the time was not and had never been a smooth jazz label. Additionally, in the three years since our last studio record, the business had changed immensely and was much harder to deal with, eventually leading to such situations as the Borders Stores closing (not to mention the huge recession that hit shortly thereafter). ITunes was yet to yield a lot of revenue for us, record stores were closing, the smooth jazz playlists were impossible to break into. It was a very pretty rough time, and we think this CD got lost in the shuffle - theres some great music on it. Includes two of our most requested and downloaded songs, Ledges Road and Malaga Sunset, as well as Avalon Tides. Vihuela (2009) The departure of our drummer and percussionist played a significant role after 2006: we started doing shows as a trio, and this activity really strengthened our playing and composition. We started to talking to (the now defunct) Vihuela Winery in Central California about doing a wine/CD project. The result was, of course, Vihuela, the wine and CD! We felt like we had matured into this trio configuration, and the CD sounds like Incendio chamber music, less soloing and more composition-oriented. Its the one a lot of folks buy after theyve tried the others, and has some really wonderful hypnotic songs on it. This also featured the first appearance of the percussionist who would join us for several years: Mr. Bryan Brock. We met him playing a gig at the LA Zoo, kept him in mind, and had him on numerous shows throughout this period. This collection includes Light Dancer and Gathering of the Clouds. At the moment this CD is download only (unless you come a show!). But you can contact us directly for a copy ($15 + shipping) - write to info@incendioband and write request Vihuela in the subject line, and well send you instructions (while supplies last). Live at the Levitt DVD (2011) This rare item was only intended to be posted on the web and used as promo material. But it came out pretty well so we decided to put it into DVD form. You can contact us directly for a copy ($15 + shipping) - write to info@incendioband and write request Live at the Levitt in the subject line, and well send you instructions (while supplies last). The Shape of Dreams (2013) After all the tumult of the recession, of the guitar trio, and of life in general, we joined again with Nicole Falzone on drums and included Bryan Brock on percussion and drums. With this lineup we went about recording a CD that would be like a streamlined culmination of what went before it - a little less synth, like Vihuela, but with the energy of a full band. in 2007 we had planted a little seed at Pandora by sending our CDs - unbeknownst to us this little seed was growing into a big ole tree! First one fan, then several, then a flood were coming to shows because of this unexpected exposure, and this CD rode on that wave. It is, to date, our most popular CD and sums up where all the other CDs were going. Includes Azucar Mocha and the ballad Someday. Compilation: Guitar Greats - The Best of the New Flamenco Volume III (2013): This compilation finds us in the company of peers and friends who love the guitar like we do. We are represented by the track Prajapati from Illumination. Three ITunes only links: In the summer of 2010, we decided to record a few cover songs with the hope of completing a full covers CD in the future. The full covers CD hasnt happened yet, but these three songs give an idea of where it would go: Concierto de Aranjuez - this is our take on the classical masterpiece by Joaquin Rodrigo. I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynors anthem takes on a new shade with this samba-fusion jam. Rainbow in the Dark - everyone in the band is a Dio fan, but Jim particularly. We love playing this! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jim Stubblefield solo CDs: Rhythm of the Heart (1998) This CD is the culmination of Jims pre-Incendio work. yielding classics like Rhythm of the Heart and Temple of the Sun. It was a semi-finalist in the New Age Voice Magazine (NAV) Acoustic Instrumental Album of the Year. This CD provided a big part of the blueprint for the Incendio sound. Rhythm features bassist Steve Hong, and drummer Jeff Packman. The group was rounded out by guitarist Michael Peters, a good friend to Incendio who has gone to on to fame as a respected guitar-builder: petersguitars. Guitarra Exotica (2008) Guitarra Exotica is Jim Stubblefields first solo CD in ten years. As a founding member of the Billboard charting world music group Incendio, Stubblefield has been regarded as a fine guitarist and composer. Guitarra Exotica is a romantic and mysterious journey into a world of exotic melodies and tantalizing rhythms. With exciting pieces such as La Selva Negra and El Vaquero, the infectious rumba rhythms will transport the listener to South America. The bulerías inspired Gitana Mora and the tangos inspired One Quiet Night draw influences from the wonderful flamenco rhythms of Andalucía. The hypnotic belly dance rhythms of Eye of the Sun are a wonderful contrast to the Eastern European sound of A Gypsys Kiss. Throughout the CD Stubblefield uses different guitars to match the mood of each piece. From the flamenco guitars on Gitana Mora to the gypsy jazz guitar on A Gypsys Kiss to the electric work on Rumba Arabe and Eye of the Sun, Stubblefield shows his versatility while also creating a well crafted blend of instruments. Guitarra Exotica features appearances by bassists Randy Tico (Strunz and Farah, Flora Purim, Airto) and Ruben Ramos. Violist Novi Novog (Prince, Doobie Brothers, Frank Zappa, David Arkenstone) and Bryan Brock on percussion round out the lineup. Inspiracion (2010) Inspiracion is Jim Stubblefields fifth solo CD since he began his recording career in the mid-90s. As a founding member of the Billboard charting music group Incendio, Stubblefield has been regarded as a fine guitarist and composer. The music on Inspiracion is influenced by the musical traditions of South America and the Mediterranean and includes rumbas, joropos, and even a Middle Eastern inspired piece. The all instrumental music is passionate and filled with lightening fast acoustic guitar playing, virtuoso world percussion and flowing bass guitar grooves. Organic and without any synthesizers, drum machines or samples, Inspiracion, is about energy, rhythm, melody, and synergy . Jim is joined by the fantastic Randy Tico (fretless bass guitar) who has played and recorded with Strunz and Farah, Flora Purim, Lawson Rollins, and Airto. The great Bryan Brock lends his incredible drumming and world percussion work to the project. During this time, Liza and JP had produced a number of music library CDs, which are CDs that are used in commercials, television, film, etc (and typically not sold in stores). Even before Incendio, we had been asked to do various projects in the latin music genre, some of which featured guitar, and some of which featured more traditional salsa without guitar. We collected the best tracks that we had made for Sonoton Music and released those. The pieces were usually recorded right before or right after an Incendio project so these pieces are intimately entwined with the band - some of those pieces have been featured a LOT on television and film, including pieces that were used in the hit movie Bridesmaids. Highlights include Bumblebee Salsa and Buzzing Rio. Liza Carbe: Wait for the Spring (2012) This CD is a little more relaxed than the usual Incendio CD, completed in the wake of the 2011 passing of Lizas mom, Betty. This features Liza on vocals. One or two songs stretch back as far as the early 80s and cover a range of Lizas emotions, mostly wistful, aching, and beautiful. Liza and JP are joined by friends Lao Tizer on piano and Joe Craven on violin. Features And I Love You Still and Forever. Book of Storms: Little Meagans Diary (1997) This is the first recorded collaboration between Liza and JP, more in a rock and singer/songwriter vein. We spent a lot of time on this band prior to Incendio - there is a lot of power-pop influence. This CD featured Derek Phillips on piano and Jaysen Hawks on drums. Songs include Windmills and the original version of Count Germain later found on Lizas Wait for the Spring. Book of Storms: City of Souls (2001) This CD was released shortly after the first Incendio CD, and had been so labored over by the time of its release that we were kind of happy to see it go. There were some great tunes on it: City of Souls which was featured in Bo Dereks last major film Horror 101, and Following the Sun which was used in Micro-Mini-Kids movie. This did feature Lizas buddy from the rock group Vixen, Tammy Coe, on guitar as well as Incendio drummer Joe Shotwell, who had played with Book of Storms and other Liza/JP-related projects prior to Incendio. Love to you all - stay warm, dry, and happy! INCENDIO
