A Hijacking is a gripping, harrowing slow burn psychological thriller that lacks that race against time quality and sense of urgency common to most Hollywood-style hostage dramas. The film has been written and directed by Tobias Lindholm, who is part of the new generation of Danish filmmakers emerging from the shadows of the Dogma movement of the 90s. Lindholm has written episodes of gritty Danish crime tv series Borgen, and he also wrote the powerful drama The Hunt, and his intelligent and complex script is unflinchingly realistic and credible. The drama moves between the ship and the board room of the shipping company, and slowly develops a tense atmosphere of fear, desperation, uncertainty and anxiety. Lindholm even tries to humanise the pirates, and he explores the reluctant camaraderie that slowly develops between the hostages and their captors. Audiences looking for a sea hijack thriller containing more action and pyrotechnics will need to wait for the similarly themed big budget Hollywood thriller Captain Phillips.
