A MALE designer admitting he designs with real women in mind? You have read that correctly. “How can I create a beautiful dress where women can also wear a bra,’’ says Roland Mouret, the man behind the world’s most flattering and consequently copied dress, the Galaxy, when asked how he came up with the design. “That was the one simple element I thought about,’’ he smiles just hours after flying in from London. The French-born, London-based designer Roland Mouret is a serious part of modern fashion history and now he has bought his style expertise to Australia as a guest of The Woolmark Company and Myer, for whom he has created an eight-piece merino wool collection. But back to the mega success of his Galaxy dress. “The realisation that I wanted to create it (the Galaxy dress) came when I was working with models for years and they were very young and tiny,’’ he says. “But you know, I realise they are not the reality. “I challenged myself to do a dress for a woman who also needs to wear a bra and the Galaxy came out that process. “From the moment of its success I wanted to dress women to look amazing.” Fashion - mannequin wearing Galaxy dress during Roland Mouret autumn/winter 2005 collection in New York 06 Jan 2005. /Fashio... I am so proud to have designed something like that.’’ As for Mouret’s Myer and Woolmark association, the collection is being fronted by renowned Aussie fashion blogger Nicole Warne (of GaryPepperGirl) and features his signature silhouettes in dresses, tops, trousers and skirts, all using his instinctive draping technique. “The collection is like colour therapy with bright blues, fluoro pinks, oranges and greens,” says Mouret. “Wool is something that I grew up with and the more you work with it shapes itself and it gives a better value and texture to your work,’’ he adds. “We have moved right along from the concept of heavy and itchy wool even though it is memory of our past it is a texture of our future.” Model Lauren Gillis models another success - the ‘Titanium dress by Roland Mouret Model Lauren Gillis models another success - the ‘Titanium dress by Roland Mouret Source: News Corp Australia While in Sydney, Mouret was on today’s judging panel for the prestigious 2014/15 International Woolmark Prize Australia regional final, offering his insights and guidance to emerging Australian designers. The award was presented today to STRATEAS. CARLUCCI — the creative collaboration between designers Mario-LucaCarlucci and Peter Strateas. Woolmark Prize Australian winner - Strateas.Carlucci “I have never been to school to be a designer so to see younger designers and look at their collections with my eyes is something I love,” says Mouret. “Fashion has gone well beyond the concept of being controlled by Paris, Milan, London, New York. That is truly finished.’’ Mouret says Australian design can be up there with the rest of the world. “Every country is ‘next door’ so distance is no issue so if you have the talent and the ego you will make it.” Roland Mouret Roland Mouret Source: Supplied “Roland Mouret is an iconic designer widely heralded by the global fashion industry,” added The Woolmark Company Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer Rob Langtry. “His craftsmanship and innovation in design allows him to beautifully showcase the versatility of Merino wool, presented by Myer for Australian consumers.” Myer, meanwhile, are delighted to be the exclusive stockist of the new collection: “I know our customers will absolutely love the styles and the incredibly vibrant colours,’’ says Nicole Naccarella, Myer Group General Manager Womenswear. After his judging role today, Roland Mouret will join an exclusive crew of guests at a dinner in Sydney, hosted by Myer on Thursday night.
