A MUST READ! Finnish teachers lauded as the worlds best could not be effective in US schools. School reform expert, Pasi Sahlberg, explains: 1. In the US, teachers alone are expected to overcome the effects of poverty. Not so in Finland. 2. Up to 2/3 of what explains student achievement is not in the control of a teacher, but US leaders are trying to claim that it is. 3. We have not yet been able to define what makes a great teacher, but US leaders are trying to do that through standardized testing. 4. Teachers in Finland are not rewarded for individual achievement or they would not be incentivized to work as teams as they do now. 5. In Finland, teachers have autonomy to plan their lessons and teach the way that leads to best results but would not in the US. 6. It takes 5-10 years of systematic practice for teachers to hit their stride.
