A Must Win for Bucs 15 Sep 2013 07:46:26 Orlando Pirates will have to repeat the feat of 2006 if they are to qualify for the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League this year. Back in 2006 (16 September to be exact) Orlando Pirates went into their final Group Stage match needing to win against Enyimba in order to qualify to the semi-finals. Pirates came into the encounter trailing second placed Enyimba by two points. The match ended 1-0 in favour of the home team courtesy of a well struck goal by former Enyimba player Onyekachi Okonkwo. Fast forward seven years later, Pirates find themselves in the pretty much the same situation. The Class of 2013 will host defending champions Al Ahly on September 21 needing a victory to guarantee a spot in the final four of the continental showpiece. Although RDS’ men have a superior goal difference than both Al Ahly and AC Leopards, the rules of the competition state that: In case of equality of points after all the group matches have been played, the classification of the teams shall be established according to the following criteria: • Greater number of points obtained in the matches between the concerned teams. • Goal difference resulting from the matches between the concerned teams. • Greater number of goals scored away from home in matches between the concerned teams. • Superior goal difference from all the matches played in the group. • Greater number of goals scored in all the matches played in the group. This means should Leopards and Pirates be on equal number of points after the final matches on September 21, Leopards who by virtue of winning 1-0 in their home match against Pirates, would qualify in second place behind Al Ahly.
