They are distinct because they represent a specific geological and hydro-geological karst phenomenon. The basic feature of #Plitvice is the appearance of calcareous tufa created by water saturated with calcium carbonate which is sprayed onto moss containing millions of algae and bacteria which secrete mucilage. The calcite crystals cling to it and transform it into “living” rock. The continuous and uninterrupted creation of phytogenous calcareous tufa at Plitvice Lakes is a natural and basic phenomenon of the national park, and is the very essence of its sustainability.
