A New Years Miracle So, I was on my my way to Terlingua and the icy roads got too slippery. Stopped in Ozona and cut my losses. No need to spend New Years in a ditch or worse. I checked with every hotel in town. Unfortunately they were all booked, and there was no place to stay. On a tip from the clerk at the last hotel, I dropped by the Crocket County Sheriffs office to see if there was a shelter anywhere. First the sheriff asked if I was on foot. Uh, no sir. I have a car. After sizing up my transportation worthiness, he said they hadnt set anything up yet; but, I could stay in a jail cell as a sleeper. I kid you not. I almost had to take him up on that. Never spent New Years in the slammer before. Maybe I could have snuck in some tequila--that would have been a once in a lifetime for sure. Wound up going to the nicest hotel I could find (slim pickins in Frozona) and getting on a waiting list for a room. Plus side was I could hang out in the lobby and watch football in comfort until I found out if I was going to have to tough it out in the car. Three hours later I had a real room but was kind of wishing I took the sheriffs offer.
