A North Carolina congregation caused a firestorm when a lead pastor requested "only white people" serve as greeters. North Carolina – Carmen Thomas, a member of Freedom House Church was appalled after receiving an email from the church’s pastor, Makeda Pennycooke, an African-American, asking black members to refrain from serving as greeters at the 9 a.m. service. Thomas told WBTV News that she believed Pennycooke sent the email to attract white people. Some excerpts from the email: “First impressions matter.” “The best of the best on the front doors.” “We are continuing to work to bring our racial demographic pendulum back to mid-line, so we would like to ask that only white people be on the front doors.” Thomas also told WBTV that she believes the reason for the racist email was the church’s bottom line, “Perhaps you believe that with a certain congregation that eventually your finances are going to run out.” Pennycooke has since apologized for the email, along with senior pastors Troy and Penny Maxwell. But Thomas doesn’t believe the apology was genuine. “The pastors have been meeting with staff and church members to confirm their commitment to diversity and to ensure nothing like this happens again,” church officials told WBTV. Well I guess so. Evidently Freedom House didn’t count on citizens speaking up. People can see right through their pathetic attempt to sell discrimination as diversity. One would think if they are seeking a mid-line, people of all colors would be asked to act as greeters. youtube/watch?v=8qeNUlnK9NE
