A Note From David LeMargee~~~ was very lucky back in 1975 when my future ex-wife, many friends and I all went to see that Marshall Tucker Band concert in Seattle. The opening act was the original Outlaws and, after the concert, all of us made a maniac caravan run to Discount Records to buy their first album before the store closed! We must have played it at least 5+ times that night, non-stop, and another 5-10 of GG&HT! I was already a professional musician at the time and soon was playing in a fairly successful bar-band covering the west coast from Alaska to No. California. We played covers mainly of Country-Rock (Eagles, Gram Parsons, Poco, Burritos, PPL, etc...) and Southern Rock, which I believe are basically the same thing generated from two different locales! I always considered this a business investment every time I went to a concert, and always took notes as to all the equipment used by each band. After that first revelation,we had most of the first album on our set list, and I never missed another Outlaws concert. In fact, our band even canceled a very nice gig just so we could see them open for Skynard in the summer of 77. Was that ever a great decision!!!!!!! I was blessed to have lived during what I call, The Second Golden Age of Rock (1967-1975) and have seen over 30 members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that was the BEST concert I have experienced (BTW: I saw Jimi twice. Hes another Seattle boy!) !!!! It was like a Southern Rock version of a shoot-out! Yes, Skynyrd had more folks and a bigger production, but, pound-for-pound and note-for-note, the Outlaws were just as good if not better. Theres a HUGE difference between listening to a tune and liking it and trying to play that song on your own. Only when you go hands-on with a tune do you really understand what the artist is doing and how challenging it really is! Im not talking just about the notes here; Im listening to the Capitol Theatre concert on U tube and the musicianship is outstanding; dynamics, tone-shifts and those beautiful harmony runs from Hughie and Billy! From a totally musical perspective, I rate the performance of GG&HT better than the Freebird I heard at that legendary concert. I love Skynyard but the Outlaws never got their true respect except from anyone who was lucky enough to see them live. I have many more insights but have written way too much for one post. Ill post more soon.... They were the BEST! Billy Jones the Outlaws Like · Dan Jones
