A Perfect Day Randy and his son Tyler had heard the buzz about Ottawa River muskies. Even if Randy’s father-in-law told him he was wasting his time in July and he should wait until fall, Tyler had this dream about catching a giant musky and Randy couldn’t wait any longer. Off we went to begin a day that will live forever in the memory of a father and his son. These two had never casted with bait caster style reels before and so we started with the basics. It was impressive how fast these two took to it and before long we were a casting team to be reckoned with Shimano Curado 300 series reels are terrific for teaching people to cast for muskies, kid friendly, and powerful so 13-year old don’t get tired burning blades all day. We specifically chose to head out at 12:30 so we could fish the night bite. There are so many great reasons to be on the water at sunset and it is by far the best time of the day to catch a #musky. Randy got his first musky before he had thrown his first hundred casts. Another couple hundred casts and Randy was fighting a much bigger fish. Tyler helped with the photo and release. Despite casting diligently and working bait well at the side of the boat the muskies just weren’t interested in hanging out with Tyler yet. When dad scored his hat-trick fish late in the day Tyler was beginning to think it wasn’t going to happen for him. The sun was settling in just above the horizon and the stage was set for yet another Disney fish happy ending. This river gives these fish of dreams away in the final frames of our story so many times over the season. With fish being active it was time to go top water on them. Catching your first musky lasts forever. Seeing it explode on a topwater takes a video clip for your brain that plays forever. The last picture says a lot but the release video of Tyler and his hard-earned trophy says it all. Modest, polite, hard-working, happy, and cool – thanks for sharing your day with me Tyler. Thanks Randy. ----------------------------------- There are two observations about Ottawa River muskies worth noting for July; they are on steroids right now and thus butt kicking strong, and they are fat like mid-September muskies putting on fat for winter. The high brown water of the spring caused a lot of fish to lay quiet during those periods and muskies ended up in pools with a lot of other fish. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and your midnight snacks just keep swimming in front of you because they can’t see you. So yeah, our muskies are more than a little bit chubby right now. Can’t wait to see what October fish are going to look like this year. Moooooooooo -- John M.
