A READING from: In The Company of The Holy Mother Page 349 Swami Ishanananda: One day the talk turned to the evil tendencies of persons who serve the saints, and Mother remarked, Well, theres such a thing as a guilt committed in the course of service. And that occurs when a person acquires some power over the person served after long attendance; then he wants to move his master about like a doll. He dictates at every turn - whether rising, sitting, eating, or doing anything whatsoever. The idea of service is then lost. Why should those come to such a state who forget their own bodily comfort and serve a saint with the idea that their happiness and sorrow consist in his happiness and sorrow? And you talk of backsliding? Many great saints have an aura of magnificience about them. Some come to serve them under its influence and get stuck to it, and there they sink. Tell me how few take up service in the true spirit. The she narrated a parable, Well, they say that when the moon is reflected in the water of a pond, the little fish there jump and run about in great glee under the idea that it is one of themselves. But when the moon sets, they are just what they were. A depression follows their frolicking, and they understand nothing. Kedar Maharaj says, I put in, that one should not stay near ones guru for long; for he says that at the sight of the common wordly daelings of the guru the disciple often loses much of his love and respect. Mother said with a laugh, In that case how will my work be carried on? Off with such great ideas of divinity; think of me as a human being, and go on doing the works just as at present following my direction and using your intelligence. You have no fear whatsoever.
