A RETIRED GENERAL SPEAKS The title of this article was taken from the second front page of todays Inquirer (Oct. 20, 2013) written by Vincent Cabreza and hereunder is my reaction: Who are these ex-generals, members of AGFO and members of PMAAA, represented by their presidents, who bravely told the President of the Republic of the Philippines to give up his pork? AGFO is the acronym for Association of Generals and Flag Officers. Some members are retirees but some are still in the active service. The members are found in the golf courses while some are scattered in all the national security apparatus of the country. At one time or another, these generals (retired & active) held the country together while the politicians were at its others throats. PMAAA is the acronym for the Philippine Military Academy Alumni Association. The members are found in Malacañang, in the Department of National Defense, in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, from the Chief of Staff to the major service commands and down to the smallest platoon. My estimate is that these associations are more powerful than the combined power of all political parties in the country and I am saying this not to scare anyone but as a statement of fact. On the front page of the same issue, it tells us the story that former Chief Justice Reynato Puno has begun to marshall People Power for the eradication of pork in every form. I need not tell anyone that in times past, People Power ousted two presidents. These two events indicate that the military and the people are fed up with the corruption and are giving a warning to our politicians to either shape up or ship out. We wish P-Noy and all our politicians heed the call of their Bosses to eliminate pork in every shape or form, now. We think it is foolhardy to allow People Power to even begin as there is no telling where it will go once it gains momentum. --- Lt. Gen. Antonio Eduarte Sotelo, AFP (Retired)
