A SMALL TRIBUTE TO RAJNI SIR.PART 9: This was Rajini’s penultimate release for the year. Shortly before his last film for 1987, Producer G.Venketesvaran - the (late) elder brother of ace director Manirathinam - invited Rajini to speak at the launch of the audio cassette for GV’s latest film AGINI NATCHATHIRAM - Directed by younger brother Manirathinam and starring Prabhu and Karthik. Rajini made a very philosophical speech, promoting sound personal and social values. In his response, the then Sherrif of Madras - AVM Saravanan - half-jokingly said that with Rajini’s sound values and principals, he should enter politics as the country can only benefit from having a leader of his calibre. The press, who were present in large numbers to cover the event, took this rather casual comment and turned it into headline news, speculating that Rajinikanth was about to enter politics. The reaction from the hundreds of Rajinikanth’s Fan associations was tremendous. All voiced their strong support for Rajini’s entry into politics. Rajini publicly stated that he had no intention of entering politics but the press dismissed these remarks. In everyone’s mind, Rajinikanth would be the future Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu - and for his fanatical following, any statement to the contrary was tantamount to blasphemy. It was in this highly charged atmosphere that Rajini released his last film for 1987, another for the Devar Films banner, titled DHARMATHIN THALAIVAN - in which Rajini once again co-starred with Prabhu. It was the Devar Films banner that brought Rajini and Suhaasini together in THAAI VEEDU. Now that same banner brought them together to star opposite each other in DHARMATHIN THALAIVAN. This film also saw the Tamil debut of actress Kushbu. Directed by S.P.Muthuraman, the film was a roaring success and was, by far, Rajini’s most successful film for that year. An award-winning soundtrack by Isai Nyaani Illaiyaraja further entrenched this film as one of the top Box-office winners for that year. This was the beginning of a brand new era for Rajinikanth. He was now truly a cult figure and this saw the period when film scripts were done purely to suit this new found image. Previously carrying the title Superstar - Rajinikanth was now - by all accounts a superstar. THODARUM..........
