A SYSTEM DEVOID OF MERITOCRACY Theres no hard and fast rule to salvaging the Nigeria perpetually deteriorating nature of the years beyond purging the system off of its corruptible propensity! No more, no less! And for those who hold rather an abysmal view of pushing back the ball to the general populace to ensue sanity in the system, should learn in the words of the late chief MKO, that indeed Nigerias fish smells and is rotten from the head! The buck stops at Mr. Presidents desk! The sense of loyalty is fast eroded, while patriotism is gone moribund! Who should be more patriotic between the governed or the governors, between the rulers or the ruled!? Most palpably, patriotism, loyalty and meritocracy ought to be the main ingredients to display as unbeatable virtues being a public official, especially in public office holding. Alas, the reverse is the case, a huge necessity for a critical review! Today, our public sector is a shadow of anything called merit! Merits are capitally lacking in the system! No one gets to any position on a cadre of pure and sincere qualification! Its not only shameful how Nigeria got to this missing link, its serially worrisome how long we shall persist in such an utterly terrible state of anti-meritocracy! If you have sojourned in any cadre, any level, any sector, any practice in the state, you would realize that nepotic-illness has fast overtaken meritocratic practice in general! From the private sector to the public domain, from the religious corners to the educational dealings of Nigerian, I keep wondering where and how we got to what! Illustrating the foregoing out from the private sector would do the most obvious justice to the foregoing. Its in the common practice now that what we call social responsibility is a mess of its conceptual meaning. Day-in-day-out, organisations would make vacancies public on the newspapers, websites. When really theres absolutely no point! A total deceit! In its real sense, the fellow to be taken has perhaps started the job before the application is rolled out at all, or in some instances, the candidates are already known, while all other vacancy-adverts are a mere societal deceits! And I wonder, why cant people do the supposedly needful!? The system is rotten of merit from the top! Same is capitally prevalent and worst still in the public circuit or our highly reputed academics, anytime an advert is rolled out, be sure, the vacancy was filled long ago defacto in its proof! We now live in an apparent state of nature, where our grading system is being enmeshed in rot! Does it matter, your qualification, grade or school!? All that now rings is who you know that could push things through for you! Our glorified secondary schools turned-private universities have further made a mess of our university standard, with more porous non-standard and compromising academic stance, sure under the full glare and indirect encouragement of public university lecturers, who parade them as academic giant in return for their own personal added purse. An average 2.2 graduate of a public university would stand far taller than a 1st class holder of a Nigerian private university. Then I wonder, whether our system is not breeding an antagonistic setting someday, where two opposing classes like the Marxs view would pitch tents of enmity against each other over what is called merit as against the paper merit of some others. Shouldnt this trend similarly bother our supposed policy makers!? If our system had been of immense valued merit, the present crisis of ASUU strike cum the health workers obviously would not have been. How? A fool obviously stood in for the federal government, and the table got turned in what I call arm twisting jugular strangulation by the learned against the imbecile representative. My diagnose of it: the imbecility of the representative, notwithstanding, arm-twisting is an act of indecent greed of accumulation thats not befitting of a class that should stand to protect merit by its stance and calling. Even, when and where the lecturing class would want to circumvent the system to theirs similar partake of the rotten national cake being the interest group that it is, a clean deal is better than a sheer generation wastage under the unending down tool arrangement being embraced. With my little preview of the so called letters in the agreement from the commencement of this crisis, I knew it was a case of arm-twisting which would lead to its present song of un-implementability. The point again, if our learned quarter even was of a meritocratic stand, the understanding of rightness would always take a toll ahead of egocentric view, let alone the fact that even if the wholesome of the demanded fund was paid, would Nigerian universities turn to highly rated African universities, let alone the Europeans, the largest chunk would end in individual stike-persons purse, yet at the expense of their products, whose future are not only bleak but certainly uncertain owing to lack of merit on the supposed proponents of merit. The main quarters of abusive merit-abusers, the legal sovereign. Hmmm! How on earth can we dissect this circuit!? So monstrous and amoebic that we can diagnose same on any level of analysis! In order to shorten the length of this essay, I would just say Nigerian leadership from the parliament to the Executive to the Judiciary know next to nothing about merit! Nigeria obviously has reduced to a configuration state of economic coma, political imbroglio and social confusion courtesy the willingness of our political leaders to toll non-merit system to think they could solve for merit! No way, no one solves for logarithm and arrives at simultaneous equation! Non of our elementary government studies is working a jack, from rule of law to checks and balances to impeachment process for gross abuse of power or incapacity, rather such other negative concepts like Nepotism, Authoritarianism, Ethnicity, Polarity... are very much in the practicality without much study of same, we know them! Stella bought a 255million naira vehicles, Senators/Reps earning the fatest in the world, private jets here, private jets there, the presidents incapacitatedness yet his overbearing on such political units as though, we are in a Unitary system, where Rivers state is holding powers on behalf of central by devolution! Several anti-meritocratic practice at the government end! Shall we just attain any height this way!? Shall we attain a growth without merit!? No way! Merit is a key element in humanity development, without its throne ascendancy ahead of other things, we are in for a bigger joke, a huger mess and a fast looming crisis someday that shall consume all the perpetrators!
