A Surgeon’s Journal Waving in life between being lucky and unlucky Dr. Mohamed AHMED-NASR Last week, I had a difficult cardiac surgery. During the post operative period the male nurse Mr. Mostafa Hamdy did an excellent job. In the next morning the patient was perfect, weaned off ventilator and doing well . The male nurse Mostafa called me to tell that the patient is all right. May I go for few hours to see my daughter 3 months old,. I missed her he added. I shall come back later . I told him go on Few ours later the hospital called me to tell me that Mostafa had a car accident . He was hit by a car while crossing the road. He had a severe brain injury . They brought him to the same intensive care to die one day later . He was 30 years old young man starting his life His daughter became orphan and his wife a young widow . How sad is this situation Then I remembered my experience in life acquired from my everyday practice . I said to myself Destiny has its reasons. Experience in life may only be acquired by following life of a large number of persons and their families for at least two or three decades. The long term follow up of a life is an empirical way to verify justice of faith and wisdom of destiny. When I first started my medical practice of cardiac surgery early in the 80s .I was used to receive families carrying on their back all misery of the world . They had no money , no health, no beauty , no stable familial life. I was sometimes telling myself if there is a real justice in this world. I was a young enthusiastic surgeon having little experience . When I followed up such families for two to three decades , I him to the same intensive care to die one day later gradually discovered that I was wrong . The families I defined as miserable were in fact as such only for a short period of time. As life continued , things have changed , some of them could make better life. They later had better luck. They were miserable for a year or two then by time things have greatly changed for all of them without exception . The empirical follow up of such families demonstrated to me that there is an obscure force managing mankind existence. With all my scientific , rational and Cartesian methodological approach to life problems , I discovered that I may empirically deduct that here is a certain type of administration of each one faith or destiny. Life is in continuous remodeling. Nothing remains as such. Humans are one day up and another day down. Fairness of faith exists. Either you have both aspects of misery and happiness in your life in the same time or you may pass half of your life happy and the other half unhappy . Look at President Mubarak life. He remained for few decades lucky. He had every thing , money , health, power , love , children. He was not suffering during his happy years of life . Luck has been smiling for him as well as for his children since their early periods of their life. Where is fairness of faith, one would have asked himself by that time. He remained as well as his children lucky for a long period Everybody were envying them. Suddenly when they started to think that everything is in their hands and will last for ever, scream of the silent faith was heard. They suddenly lost their precious child . They then lost power , health, family gathering and even respect of the population. All the luck they had in a part of their life became a series of bad luck in the other part. When they were under light projectors everything and everybody were following them but now in the dark even their shadow does not follow them Everybody were envying them. Suddenly when they started to think that everything in their hands will last for ever, Destiny intervened. They suddenly lost their precious child . They then lost power , health, family gathering and even respect of the population. All the luck they had in a part of their life became a series of bad luck in the other part. When they were under light projectors everything and everybody were following them but now in the dark even their shadow does not follow them. The same occurred to President MORSI. From Jail he became President then suddenly became impeached The above examples teach us that no one should envy any very lucky person. Similarly the lucky persons should never be arrogant thinking that their happiness will last for ever . I think that it is much better to have a mixture of happiness and misery in the same time as all humans rather than being extremely lucky part of his life then extremely unlucky in the second part of his own existence. Life is always in continuous remodeling. All have the right to be happy and enjoy luck but without forgetting the unlucky ones because one day time will change and they may be of the other side of the barrier. E mail: [email protected]
