A Time for Everything Part 5 Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. We will continue with the second part of verse 7 where Solomon tells us that there is a time to be silent and a time to speak. The Bible tells is in 1 Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you. This is to say that we learn to be quiet, mind your own business and pay attention to what God had told you to do. The Bible also tells us in James 1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. We need to listen more than we speak. This could be why God gave us two ears and one mouth, hearing is more important than speaking. We need to be able to hear so we can get instructions from God and the only thing we need to say in reply is Yes Lord. Even if we’re not able to speak, thats fine with God because He knows the thoughts and intents of our heart. When God is speaking we should not interrupt Him. We dont like it when someone does it to us, so why would we do it to God. So there is a time to be quite and listen to God and a time to open our mouths and speak to Him and to others. We have been commanded to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, all we have to do is ask God to lead us to someone to witness to and I know that He will do it. Then in verse 8 Solomon tells us there is a time to love and a time to hate. We should always love so the time to love is now. The two great commandments are found in Mark 12:30-31 which states And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. Here we see the two great commandments of the Law spoken in the New Testament. This reinforces the fact that Jesus came to fulfill the law, because He tells us that the Law and the prophets stand on these two commandments. First we are to love God with all that we are, and then we are to love our neighbor. Many think that our neighbors are those we know in our community and church, but Jesus takes it a step further. In the story of the Good Samaritan we see a Jewish man was beaten and left for dead and that a Jewish Priest and a Levite saw the man and passed him by. But then a Samaritan stopped and took care of this man that he didnt know. Then the people realized that the one who was the neighbor was the one who didnt even know the man but yet cared for him. Everyone we come in contact with in life is our neighbor and we have a responsibility to take care of them by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The time to hate also had its time and place. We should hate unrighteousness even as God does. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 11:1 The Lord detests the use of dishonest scales, but he delights in accurate weights. God does not like it when someone wants to cheat another person. The Bible also tells us in Psalm 45:7a Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: God hates wickedness, evil and sin. We should also hate these things. And finally Solomon tells us that there is a time for war and peace. There is a time for war in the natural realm especially when the people of God are being mistreated. God would use one nation to conquer another when His people were being mistreated. When God would send His people into captivity as a form of discipline, when their captors treated them harshly, God would raise up another nation to punish them. This didnt only happen in the Old Testament, but it has happened in our day in time. When Adolph Hitler was killing the Jewish people in Germany, God raised up an alliance of nations to punish him. And there is a time for peace. Peace can only come when God brings it about. During the rule of Solomon there was peace in Israel, but this was by the hand of God. There will be another time of peace on earth as well, and it will be the 1000 year reign of Jesus. So as we have seen that there is a time for everything, lets ask God for wisdom when deciding when these times are to come about in our lives. May the peace and love of God be with you always!
