A Yoga Adventure in Nepal Dates: April 5 – 15, 2015 Teachers: Heather Elton, Deepti Gupta, and guest teachers Location: Kathmandu Valley (Kathmandu, Pashupati, Boudhanath, Patan, Bhaktapur, Pharping) Cost: £1,295 GBP (includes yoga tuition, basic shared accommodation, breakfast, and transportation to sacred sites. Lunch and dinner are not included in the price, or additional charges for single rooms.) The Program: ‘Embodying the Sacred’ Nepal is the land of ‘Living Tantra’ and it finds expression in architecture, painting, sculpture, dance and performance, as well as rituals and ceremonies. To the uninitiated eye, the true meaning behind a holy site, the deities covering temple walls, or a sacred ritual, can be lost, or obscured and a sense of exclusivity can arise. Therefore, we’ve designed a program that is both a transformational journey taking you deep youre your own practice, and provides the context to find meaning in the experience and embody the sacred. You will have a glimpse through the Newari latticed window into different Tantric practices: Tibetan Vajrayana, Hindu Shiav margi and Durga Shakti workship, Tantric priests, Bhakti, all within the context of yoga. This is an innovative, non-dogmatic, interdisciplinary yoga experience, with over 75 hours of teaching, to deepen your understanding of yoga and spiritual practice. The thread of this unique Himalayan pilgrimage is the Yoga, and we will receive teachings and practice yoga continuously as we travel to sacred sites in Nepal. Our teachers are experienced yogis, spiritual masters, and artists, many who’ve lived in Nepal for over 25 years. They will guide us through the fascinating mix of Buddhist and Hindu iconography to discover the roots of Tantra in Nepal all within the context of yogic philosophy and practice. Wander the winding streets of medieval towns to visit ancient shrines, temples and museums; Learn about devotional iconography in architecture, sculpture and art. Walk the Kora around the enormous stupa at Boudhanath topped by a gilded spire painted with the eyes of the Buddha; Receive Buddhist and Hindu teachings from spiritual masters; Participate in darshan, ritual and puja. Meditate in the cremation ghats of Pashupatinath; Spin prayer wheels, raise prayer flags, recite mantras; mediate with monks; Watch the sacred Lama (Cham) Dance at Shechen Monastery; Practice mediation/pranayama/asana, all within the context of Patanjali’s 8-limbed path and yogic philosophy; Study a Sanskrit text and paint a mandala; Study mudras/gestures/postures to decipher the meaning behing devotional Hindu iconography; Who Should Come? This yoga adventure is for people with a genuine interest in the broad scope of yogic philosophy and spiritual practice; as well as Dharma practitioners, artists, sculptors, photographers, and those with an interest in spirituality and culture of Nepal. You should have been on the yoga path for some time. You dont need an advanced asana practice, but you do need to have read a few basic yoga philosophy texts, have a regular yoga practice, and a open and curious mind that is flexible to different cultural and philosophical views. This adventure is ideal for young yoga teachers who want to integrate yoga philosophy and texture into the teachings, or Religious Studies academics who want to contextualise the theory into a living practice. It helps if you’re an experienced traveller, or someone willing to immerse yourself in Nepalese culture and push the boundaries of your comfort zone. We want to travel with people who are willing to engage in journey as a spiritual sadhana. A Tantric practice is about transformation. Warning: This is not ‘spiritual tourism,’ or a ‘yoga asana holiday.’ It’s not for people with a need for high standards of comfort, or who don’t wish to engage in spiritual practice. eltonyoga/yoga-tour-nepal.html
