A big thank you to the sponsors of the Meet the Candidates debate - TopicsExpress

A big thank you to the sponsors of the Meet the Candidates debate this week! Thank you as well to everyone who attended. It was a standing room only crowd in the Senior Center! There will be one more Meet the Candidates night on Oct. 15, which will also be held at the Senior Center. In an effort to make sure residents are kept informed with accurate information, I would like to clarify two statements that my opponent made during the debate. 1). He said he voted to repeal the expensive business disproportionate fees that he had previously voted for. This was not correct. He did not vote to repeal those fees (see council meeting minutes from July 10, 2012). I gave him the opportunity to correct his statement and he would not correct it. 2). When asked about the public works bond and petition, he said he was not against the petition and he let the people do it. This is also not a true statement. He openly fought against resident’s right to petition. During the petition, he stated in an email (date 8/16/11) that he opposed resident’s right to vote on the public works facility $10 million bond because he said it was unconstitutional. The fact is, the first amendment states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Meaning that this petition process was not acting against the constitution, in fact, it is an important component of it. I appreciate the opportunity I have to serve the citizens of North Ogden City and believe that all residents need to hear the facts about where candidates stand in order to make informed choices based on the truth and voting records. Thank you!!
