A blogger has pleaded guilty to charges of hate speech and undermining authority for a Facebook post in which he criticised President Uhuru Kenyatta. The blogger, Alan Wadi Okengo, however blamed the post on his mental condition and asked the court to forgive him. Okengo told the magistrates court in Nairobi that he suffers a mental condition and was not in his right sense when he made the post. Okengo faced a one year jail term or a fine of Sh200,000 for hate speech while the second count on the same charge will see him spend one year in jail. Okengo becomes the second accused to face charges of hate speech and undermining authority against a sitting head of state as another accused, Dedan Alpha Marenya faced similar charges for an abusive text message allegedly sent to Deputy President William Ruto. Marenya who was remanded by Senior Principal Magistrate Enock Cherono will appear in court on January 6 when his application for bail will be ruled on.
