A book depicting the life of legendary Naxal leader Kanu Sanyal entitled ‘The First Naxal: An Authorised Biography of Kanu Sanyal’, has been published by SAGE Publications, the California-based international publication house. The book is written by Kolkata-based journalist Bappaditya Paul and will be released worldwide later this week. The 264-page book is primarily based on several direct and recorded interviews of Kanu Sanyal, the founder of the Naxalite Movement. It is the only authorised biography of Kanu Sanyal as he had personally read and acknowledged all the chapters save for the last one that deals with his unexpected demise in 2010. While scores of books have been penned over the years on the Naxalite Movement, ‘The First Naxal’ is the only book wherein the founder is himself narrating the story about the origin, progress, climax and present status of the movement. The book brings to light several hitherto unknown and startling facts of the Naxalite Movement. According to the publisher, the book makes startling revelations about China’s plans and explores into the depths of the Naxalite Movement since its inception to transition. In his commentary, Sanyal has been found critiquing the Maoists for deviating towards the path of terrorism. He also reveals former chief minister Jyoti Basu wishing the Naxals joined the CPM and his forewarning that the farmers of Singur would never get their land back due to the efforts of Mamata Banerjee. SAGE Publications India Pvt Ltd MD and CEO Vivek Mehra said, “Every once in a while comes along a book that makes one rethink conventionality. The idea of Naxalism is also revisited through the eyes of the very first Naxal. I am sure this will be a book which will make us pause to rethink what we believe.” The author of the book is a senior reporter with ‘The Statesman’, which has its headquarters in Kolkata. Paul received his Master’s degree in Mass Communication before joining the newspaper in 2005 in Siliguri as a staff reporter. Paul has published a number of articles on issues ranging from Naxalism to the Gorkhaland movement and contemporary Indian politics to environmental degradation. (PR)
