A brand new magazine was launched last friday here on the island, titled Koze, which means Speak or Talk. I had the great honour of participating as a feature artist in this inaugural editional. Please click on the link below, just above the picture to see the full picture and French version. Here is an English translation. Musicologist and musician, marketing expert and speaker , Allan Dacruz - Al - is a rare bird. Meet The Man Who wears a Superman shirt and makes you laugh until you drop. Al, you have a fascinating journey. Tells us. I was born in Mauritius but my parents moved to England when I was young, so I grew up there. I worked for a long time for an insurance company in London, then at Maiden Outdoor in Birmingham, one of the very large companies marketing outdoors in England. When my mother died in 2005, I returned to Mauritius to take care of real estate belonging to my family. A few years later, the death of my father, I decided that I was done with corporate life so I took the opportunity to create a home studio. Since I am fully dedicated to music! Where does this passion for music? I play guitar and drums ever since. When I lived in London, I played for a gothic band called The Cage (laughs). They wanted to be more rock and roll ... more pleasant to listen to, so they hired me as a drummer. Were rehearsed in a studio in Waterloo, and it took me about 30 minutes to install my drums: it was pack, unpack, repack ... I still remember our first gig in Brixton, White Horse. Dry ice gave a special atmosphere, and I felt a lot of pressure because the drummer can not make a mistake. If he is wrong, the rhythm is broken and the song stops! Finally, the concert was great, and I was elated. Other members of the group looked at me with a look that said Wow. I realized that day that they could trust me, that I had the ability to shine. Later, I took a sabbatical in Australia. It is there that I really developed my guitar playing, and I also DJd for a while. Id like to learn to play a wind instrument, because I more or less tried everything but that. What is your news? In 2013 I met Christophe Van De Kerchove. Hes a great musician and a master of recording. We shared each others life stories and we eventually started playing together because we share the same musical aspirations. At the moment, you can see us play at Banana Beach Café Sunday. You can also see me on Wednesday and Friday evening at the Sports Café 18 (Circle Square Forbach). Im also producing my first album, which includes 8 different kinds of music. I reserve 2 songs to a new genre that Im developing, because I love innovation. Do you remember the first album of Daft Punk? Their music was truly unique ... I would also like to promote Mauritius as a musical destination, much like Bob Marley did for Jamaica. What are your musical influences? An album you will awlays have with you? I like wonderful, great, classic songs - songs that transcend the boundaries of genres and can be enjoyed by all. I selected two albums: Nerina Pallots Fires and Dont Look Back by Boston. These albums inspire me and have a strong emotional impact on me. Beyond my personal tastes, they are of wonderful music quality. Youre Mauritian, you speak BBC English, your name is of Portuguese origin and you look a bit Caribbean. Describe us your identity. I consider myself an International Man of Mystery (he said with perfect ease). I also used this expression before Austin Powers! I think it also describes my musical identity: I love world music. I discovered this kind in Australia, where I attended the Womad Festival. It is so easy to talk to you about everything and anything ... Thou hast a taboo subject? Its simple: religion and politics. There are so many conflicting opinions, it is messy and not wise to get into. I like to be fun, so I sometimes make a joke on any of these subjects after a few drinks (wink). The only time I am allowed to express my opinion is through a song I wrote for suicide bombers, entitled A life worth dying for. What is your secret for being so cool and versatile? Find a time each day for exercise and do some. You and feel younger and more positive. I like to ensure that I am physically strong enough to carry out my plans and ambitions - its the key to success. It is true that Al appears to be 25 years old when he has *** (secret). Kozeurs then you get the message: play sports, play music and have fun! koze.mu/in-bed-with/in-bed-with-al/
