A couple days ago a friend here in Caledonia sent me a cell phone picture of a bird in his garden. He was hoping I could identify it. I looked at his picture of the bird, with its head and neck straight up in the air as a form of camouflage as he was approached. With the vertical stripping and the posture, I immediately thought he had an American bittern in his garden. Why would the very reclusive bittern be in someones garden? The next day my friend called to say there were four of the birds in his garden and standing on the edge of his pool. That was too much, and I had to go take a look myself. Sure enough, the bitterns were hanging out in his yard and garden. I was able to get relatively close to one of them, which began my doubt that they were bitterns. After a good look and some photos, I believe they are immature little green herons, which would make much more sense regarding their behavior. Any opinions from those of you that are fellow birders? Thanks! Nikon D7100 with the 80-400 VR lens.
