A dear friend and colleague going into retirement sent this: On Parting© Lines and shadows may fade stage by stage, The warm vivid hues to shades of gray, Our shared memories thus rephrased By time through its ceaseless lapping ways. Our common days are more precious now Knowing our time must come to an end. Thought and emotion mingle, endowed By mem’ry’s balm that we may contend. Let us be thankful for what’s been shared, Living much enriched, if not content. For we have been blessed beyond compare To walk the solace of days well spent. Shared moments, so moving in beauty, Are gifts of mind and soul extolling, Grace transcendent and heartfelt duty, Love’s labors lent, so self-consoling. Let us in melancholy moments When we can only lament our loss, Remand our dreams that joy may foment. Love abides and forgets not its cost. Farewell, dear friend, for the time has come To start anew and fulfill those dreams Which are the recompense of freedom. Let us so live that they be redeemed. For our stars must rise to be set free. Now paths must part, but still stand we true, Our time nearly spent, save for reprise To take the measure of hearts renewed. Septermber, 2008 Larry Wray
