A device to ease flat tyre woes Team designs trolley wheels that help rider reach repair shop without pushing bike and also protect damaged tyre A flat tyre is something every two-wheeler rider dreads. The problem is compounded if the biker is on a highway or travelling at night. A majority of bikes in India run on tube tyres, which are susceptible to puncture and leaks. To make matters worse, it is not easy to replace a flat. In any case, unlike four-wheelers, motorcycles cannot accommodate a spare tyre. At the same time, the condition of Indian roads is such that a puncture can never be ruled out. Hence, a team of students of BMS College of Engineering came out with a device that can come in handy in case of a puncture. Bhushan V, one of the students, says, “It acts as an auxiliary stand for the front and rear wheels. It lifts the wheel to a certain height above the ground in case of a puncture.” Nithesh K, a member of the team, says, “The auxiliary stand is fitted with rubber trolley wheels. In case of a puncture, engage the stand. The trolley wheels are connected to a motor, which is good enough to power the vehicle for a few kilometers till you find a puncture repair shop. ” “The auxiliary stand ensures that the punctured tyre has no contact with the ground,” added Praveen Kasa, the third member of the team. The fourth member, Shirish Uday Mannur, says, “I got the idea when I suffered a flat tyre while heading to the college for an internal exam. I could not reach on time. That was when I decided to have a system that can help in such situations.” The auxiliary stand not only helps the motorist reach a puncture shop, but in the bargain also protects the damaged tyre. “The potential is immense,” says the fifth member of the team Abhishek V adding, “There are around 30 lakh bikes on the city’s roads.”
