A few things I learned from the past week: 1.) Wear long pants if youre putting down sport court, or else make sure you dont drop any of the tile sheets. 2.) The single-stopwatch method for penalty box timing is actually easier than the app. 3.) Reinforced the knowledge that no electronic scoreboard is flawless, and they WILL crash or glitch at the most inconvenient times. Thats why I use two stopwatches at Jam Timer. 4.) The dot method for Score Keeping is a big help in keeping that extra layer of information about the game, plus keeping up a banter to keep yourself and the other score keeper aware of whats going on is a huge benefit. 5.) I can actually write with a pen/pencil again after two or three months of not being able to hold either. No guarantees on my handwriting legibility however. 6.) Reinforced the knowledge that clear communication with the head ref when Im jam timing is critical for the flow of the game. 7.) Theres lots of paperwork in roller derby, some of which I had not seen before this past week. Being a CHNSO is hard, but is made much easier by people who are willing to step up and help with my shortcomings. I will be much better at it next time. 8.) There are bunches of people who dedicate huge effort and time to making sure tournaments like the Junior Championships/JuniorCon happen, and even when it isnt exactly without a hitch everything still gets done so the players can get out there and play their hearts out. Im sure theres others, so Ill write them up as they occur to me. I would like to say again that I was hugely blessed by being able to participate in the events of the past week or so, and I cant wait to do it again. How can I be so lucky to be a part of this?
