A few things about the Turks and Caicos Islands...... 1. I have never seen so many shades of blue in my life. Breathtaking water. 2. Major mosquitos.....I am polka dotted :( 3. This is our 2nd time staying at a Private Villa. First time in St. Thomas. I would recommend staying at a villa. Especially, if you can speak to the owner personally. This made a huge difference. She also called to check on us. We feel like personal welcomed guests in her beautiful home. Yes, you do need to cook your meals, but its worth the experience. You feel part of the island life. 4. VERY expensive island because everything is imported!! Can of coffee $30, Peanut Butter $20, Case of Corona $70, Case of bottled water $20. Just a few examples. 14 people.....now thats a grocery bill! 5. Not a very tropical island. Not good for shopping. Not good for exploring. Water is unbelievable. Thankfully we have a beautiful villa right on the water and within walking distance of the beautiful Taylor Bay. Thats where we spent most of our time. 6. A negative about this island that has left us all very heavy hearted is the feral dogs that are everywhere. Everywhere you go you see puppies and dogs just living on the streets. I have unfortunately seen a few that have been hit by cars and left. This is common here because of the overpopulation. BUT, as an American this is unheard of and very sad. They call them Pot Cake Puppies. They call them this because locals will smash what is left over at dinner into a cake and feed the dogs. I have witnessed a local woman doing this every day. You can adopt a Pot Cake Puppy for $40 with all of its shots and take it home. I am very tempted, but have my hands full with my animals now. Many people leave the island with puppies. There is a wonderful program here and it is something that is worth supporting. Cant wait to hug my dogs. 7. On a happier note, I am coming home tomorrow. As beautiful as an island is and as great of a time you may have.....there is no place like home!!! Good ol USA! I know its below freezing and I will probably seize up when I open the airport doors, but I am ready.
