A few thoughts. Ive been in aviation since just before getting out of high school. I really dont actually like airplanes or aviation very much, though while I was actively flying, I sure did. I stopped flying in 1988. Done Crash/Rescue at the Hyannis Airport in the 80s, worked the flight line other times, did part time hotel work alongside. Airlines in 1991 and since. Im very happy that its only a job and not a passion. Thats because I have a balanced life. Many interests all varied. The tell all book probably wont happen. I think the funny stories are for around the table. Ive seen some stuff, Ill tell you, and have the memories, but since Im not a writer, theyre best left to telling in person. The aviation jargon is bad enough. My hearing isnt bad, but not what it was. I do have a little tinnitus I think (think winter at Hanscom, yanking a power cart cable out of the bottom of a Lear Jet, no hearing with the ye olde tech late 70s screaming engines , before noise abatement rules, 2 feet above your head). If I were 22 again, no way Id go into aviation. Its a dirty business, but so are a lot of other businesses. The new technologies make it safer today to a point, but only to a point. The regs can let me do stupid things legally. Safety critical work is outsourced to the lowest bidder. The Buffalo crash was greed pure and simple. The regional airline industry is in trouble because of the new rules it caused. More crewmember rest time is a good thing. I will be happy to get out eventually. I will miss some of the people, but thats about it. Thank Heavens I never made this industry my end all an be all for living. I knew quite a few who did.
