A few useful rules of right form of verbs: +Join→ Job Preparation [ BCS+BANK ] Look forward to, with a view to, be addicted to, be used to, get used to, object to, etc. are followed by a ‘Verb+ing’ form. e.g. I’m looking forward to seeing him. It is time, it is high time etc., if followed by a subject then the subject is followed by the Past form the verb. But if not followed by subject then use the verb with infinitive ‘to’ e.g. It is high time you realized your mistake. It is time to open the door. Lest+ Subject+ should+ others. e.g. He ran fast lest he should miss the train Cannot help, could not help, mind, would you mind + Verb+ing. e.g. We could not help laughing. Would you mind opening the window? Wish, as if, as though + subject+ were (be) e.g. I wish I were as tall as my brother. Maria walks as though she were lame. Avoid, consider, enjoy, excuse, stop, finish, forgive , give up, Practice, prefer, pardon, suggest, etc. verbs are followed by ‘Verb+ing’. But if object comes after, then infinitive ‘to’ is used. e.g. I have finished reading the book. My teacher suggested me to do well. Afford, advise, begin, desire, decide, dare, expect, hope, intend, offer, promise, refuse, want, wish etc. verbs are followed by infinitive ‘to’ e.g. I advised him to give up smoking. He promised to speak the truth. If more than+ singular noun, then singular verb. If more than+ plural noun, then plural verb. e.g. More than one boy is allowed to come. More than two boys are allowed to come. If words like dozen, pair, hundred, thousand etc. are followed by a noun, then singular verb is used. e.g. One dozen of bananas is enough for us. There is a pair of birds in the cage. Verbs that do not take preposition after them: Discuss, Enter, Marry, Inform, Lack, Resemble, Approach, Answer, Phone, investigate, order etc. e.g. Please answer to the question (wrong) Please answer the question (right) We should discuss about the matter (wrong) We should discuss the matter (right) Admin- 『 Rashed Zaman 』 Department of Finance & Banking,Islamic University,Bangladesh.
