A followup post shared from Tom Kiefabers FB page. Responding to the nasty, hater trolls who foul the Suns comment section is a fruitless exercise, yet despite that fact, I was just goaded into it. My post is sure to generate condemnation and accusations of sour grapes, yet its done. The following heresy may well trigger my involuntary, reprisal return to Central Booking. My Sun post: My family were movie pioneers in Baltimore, operating over 45 movie houses for more than 100 years. What all film exhibitors know is that there are two primary reasons to cloak movie attendance figures, per location. Either to hide your success from potential competitors or to shield lousy grosses. During the 18-month period the Cusacks operated The Senator as a single-screen, they reported attendance to Rentrak, a national first-run gross collection service that 99% of the industry uses, voluntarily. The Friends of The Senator (FOTS) organization compiled The Senators Rentrak grosses from that period, noting that attendance projections supplied to the Board of Estimates,(BOE) in actuality tallied far short of ever matching the *worst* year at The Senator under prior ownership & operation, Their conservative projections on record fell short by nearly 60%. Those alarming stats were ignored by all, particularly the media, and The Senator has since cut ties with Rentrak altogether. Senator Theatre grosses are now only directly supplied as apparent state secrets to the various film distributors, who never keep secrets from their friends. The Senators opening weekend box-office tally was $26,426.00. Captain Phillips- $13,200, Gravity-$7,840, Meatballs-$3160, I am Divine-$2200. Low grosses, pretty god awful and alarming, in fact, in comparison to the market grosses last weekend. It will take a bona-fide, Act-of-God miracle to substantially increase The Senators dismal initial grosses out of the gate, to even approach what the taxpayers were led by the nose to believe by the new owners, & the BDC. Ive never seen it occur, yet perhaps all the rampant magical thinking can reverse the gravity of the situation. Oh Lord, I may well be my own worst enemy, after all. I must now carry my toothbrush and an extra sweater with me as I go about my business in notoriously corrupt Baltimore City. If I end up back in the slammer with even more punitive, bull-crap charges leading the local TV news, please visit.
