A former postal worker accused of embezzlement appeared in court this week and said she wants to reimburse the federal government. Trisha Hider-Floyd was charged with one felony count of embezzlement in a complaint filed in Yuba County Superior Court on Monday. She learned of a warrant for her arrest from an article in the Appeal-Democrat on Wednesday, contacted an attorney, and was in court on Thursday. Defense attorney Arturo Marquez told the court that Hider-Floyd readily admitted to the theft and was told that if she would reimburse the federal government, charges wouldnt be filed. She was told restitution would resolve the whole thing, Marquez said. A criminal investigator for the Postal Service Office of Inspector General said in an affidavit that during a July 2013 interview, Hider-Floyd admitted that she did not pay for money orders that were paid out to herself. Those money orders allegedly totaled about $9,500. Hider-Floyd said the investigator gave the impression that if she admitted to the theft and agreed to a payment plan, then her position would be terminated and no charges would be filed. I just wanted to do the right thing, she said. About a month after the meeting, she received a notice that a payment schedule would be set up. But, she said, she never heard from them again. She tried calling the inspector general and her former postmaster general find out how to pay the government, she said, but never reached the correct person. Marquez agreed to represent Hider-Floyd pro bono. If she were gambling at the casino with the money, it would be different, Marquez said. She was a single mother trying to take care of her kids. Hider-Floyd said she is remorseful and wants to fix her mistake. (At the time of the embezzlement) I was struggling to make a life and make sure my kids were taken care of, she said. I would do anything to take care of my children. Im just trying to fix a mistake and try to move forward. Judge Julia Scrogin noted Hider-Floyd promptly appeared in court and did not remand her into custody. The next court date in the case is scheduled for Jan. 28.
