A friend and colleague recently bought a new home. He and his entire family were very excited about the purchase. The house was brand new, completely finished, much bigger with more features than their existing home, a nicer neighborhood, a shorter commute, a great price – not a downside in sight. As the movers were finishing up and just moments before walking out and closing the door behind them for the last time, he realized his wife was standing perfectly still, looking out the kitchen window at the back yard. And she had tears in her eyes. He asked her what was wrong and she replied, “I suddenly can’t imagine not being here…” He got tears in his eyes. They realized with a painful finality that they were going to miss the comfort and familiarity of the home they had owned and loved for years. In every significant transition, even transitions that are perceived as positive, there is a sense of loss. It comes from the loss of what we value and from the reordering of values. ─ Tom Akins
