A great post yesterday from Paul (see below) - something I have been pondering about. As a former high school teacher I know how difficult it can be to teach persuasive writing to adolescents let alone 8 year olds - basics really matter in literacy and numeracy..... People are missing the real point of the problem. This is Common Core rebranded. Year 3 children are focusing on writing Persuasive Text, rather than learning how to spell. Learning number sentences rather than basic arithmetic. We see the consequences of bright year 5 students who use limited vocabulary in their written work, because they simply do not know how to spell, and dont know times tables. The National Curriculum and Naplan testing as pushing students to learn advanced concepts prematurely before basic concepts are understood. Its not a liberal or labour issue, its bureauocrats experimenting with our children.
