A higher-carbohydrate meal will lead to greater carbohydrate use during exercise. Conversely, a higher fat and protein intake will lead to greater fat use during exercise. This is largely a function of acute hormonal status and nutrient availability. When carbohydrates are abundant from a high-carb meal, they’re burned preferentially. However, when they’re not and fat/protein is provided, higher levels of the hormone glucagon, combined with lower levels of blood carbohydrates, can lead to a relatively higher rate of fat burning...Precision Nutrition.
