A large solar flare impacted the western U.S., Hawaii, Pacific, - TopicsExpress

A large solar flare impacted the western U.S., Hawaii, Pacific, New Zealand for almost an hour starting just after 5pm today. The flare, measuring X3.1 and classified R3, caused a ham radio blackout, GPS and satellite phone problems for these areas. Despite the problems these solar flares cause to communications, the earths atmosphere protects us on the surface from any harmful radiation. Surprisingly, the Space Weather Prediction Center says that this solar flare likely did not send out a plasma cloud (coronal mass ejection) which is typical with such large flares. This means that view of the northern lights in our region is unlikely. However SPWC is continuing to review incoming information so stay tuned!
