A limited days cricket yesterday, that leaves things interestingly poised for next week. The firsts and seconds were both called off earlier in the week, and will take on North Geelong in one-dayers next Saturday, while the 3rds and 4ths managed to get on for day one of their 75 over games, and the 6ths and 7ths both fronted up for round 2 of their one day seasons. In the 3rds, we batted first and made a bit of an uncertain start to be 3/29 in the 29th over. Chris Totton and Cam Ayres then managed to combine for a 40 run stand before Cam was dismissed, and Chris and Leigh Fraser then put on 94 to get us to 5/163. Bones was eventually out for 42, but Chris ended up batting through the innings, securing the Jack Stokes trophy for the first ton for the season with an excellent 103 not out. We finished up at 6/215 from our 75 - a solid recovery from our earlier position, but a total that will still require us to bowl well if we are to secure the points. We also batted first in the 4ths, and although we lost Terry Ollis early, Michael Krig (28) and Mitch Grinter (17) saw us to a solid position of 1/53 before our innings fell in a hole badly, as we lost 6/6 in the space of 7 overs to collapse to the dire position of 7/59. It was always going to be tough to claw our way back from there, and although Luke Plunkz Plunkett contributed 19 from number 11, we ended up bundled out for the disappointing total of 90 in the 63rd over. With the ball, we started solidly enough, with Shane Field claiming an early wicket, and Punchy bowling four consecutive maidens to have the Magpies 1/11 at stumps, but with so few runs on the board our bowlers have got a massive task ahead of them next week if were to have any chance of getting the win. The 6ths took on Leopold up at Oberon, and coming off a first up win were looking to go 2-0 and set themselves up well. We batted first, and made a strong start, with out top order bats all making strong contributions to see us on our way to a good total. Hans Scharner (37), Todd McKiernan (23), and Tyson Stokes (20) all played good innings, but it was Liam Biggins following up his good form from last week to knock up 51 retired which saw us to the very defendable total of 8/181 from our 40 overs. Leopold made it to 1/56 in reply, then 2/80 and 4/122. We had to work hard for wickets, but with runs on the board we were able to keep the pressure on and restrict their scoring. In the end, they finished up at 8/151 to give us a well fought out 30 run win. Biggo again capped an excellent all round game with a couple of wickets, but it was the skipper Thommo with the pick of the figures, claiming 3/22 from his 8 overs to guide the boys to an undefeated start to the season. In the 7ths, we travelled to Lara to take on the Cats, where we won the toss and batted first. We lost Jexy early to be 1/8, but Grant Quarrell made 25 to see us recover somewhat. A number of guys made starts for us but failed to go on with it, as we lost regular wickets from there, and our inability to form a decent partnership saw us finish with the disappointing total of 101 all out in the 34th. We started well with the ball, Mitch Thomas claiming a couple of early scalps to have them 2/12, and a string of quick ones saw us reduce them to 7/46 to take control of the game. Needing to take 3/56 to win, we would have liked our chances, but unfortunately we copped some stick from their number 9, and only managed one more wicket as they eventually knocked us off by two wickets in the 23rd over. Mitch finished with the figures of 3/20, and Alex Schmidt and Nathan Krig also grabbed a couple each, but unfortunately it wasnt enough for us, as the boys missed out to slump to 0-2 and still yet to open their account. The Under 17s also continued their season yesterday, travelling to Anglesea to take on a strong Kangaroos side. Following on from last week, where we managed only the disappointing total of 9/68, Kristen Berrigan the only real contributor with 31, we struggled with the ball, as the Roos passed us without loss and went on to knock up 154 for the first wicket. Wade Linguey finally claimed our first wicket, while Aiden Timberlake also picked up one, but it was a disappointing day for the boys, as we were comprehensively beaten by a better opponent. 1-1 there for the boys now, and definitely some early positives, but clearly a lot to work on also following yesterdays result. With plenty of hard work we will certainly be out to be more competitive next week, as we take on Bell Park in another away game.
