June 16th: The Grand Budapest Hotel. I wasnt sure what to think about this movie before I watched it. Its a Wes Anderson film, and that comes with big advantages and some drawbacks. I dont know if it just hit the right chord at the right moment, but I was utterly and thoroughly delighted by the movie. It oozed charm from every line, every set, every chapter (yes, it has chapters). I found the kookiness pleasantly kooky and not just flogging around trying too hard. Ralph Fiennes delivers every line with such carefree zest that you cant help but love him, even though hes pretty much an awful person. The movie has shootings, poisoning, family squabbling, theft, intrigue, faux Nazis; but the thing that makes it all work is just how gentle it all seems, in the best possible way. Like a fairy tale, almost. The best way for me to describe the movie is that it was a cross between Life of Pi and the TV show Pushing Daisies, and thats pretty high praise. Highly recommended.
