A little Greek something Concerning Hades - The word idea as in the Idea of the Good, means literally to behold the Good. Its a Greek word idea, associated with the faculty of vision, be it physical or (even better) mental seeing, as in the seeing of the eye of the soul in a divine luminosity experience which is the essence of the meaning of Idea of the Good, naturally. horaein to see, the perfect of horaein oida I know or have seen (like the Rastafarians are fond of bragging seen), eidon I saw the aorist tense of the same, eidos and idea, two words both equally translated as Form or Idea as in the Platonic Forms, are all fundamentally related towards one another, that is to say they are all members of the same idea or word family in Greek. (note the stem -id- common to all these forms save horaein) Hades is the alpha-privative prefix ha- (coupled with a rough breathing mark, which gives an h- sound in pronunciation) combined with -ides, that ha + ides, and the combination makes the iota (i in English) to either be subsumed in the alpha (a in English) or to become an iota-subscript, a soft iota, as it were, the word that gets translterated as Hades... the name of the God of the Underworld, as depicted below (with his three-headed dog, the so-called Hound of Hell, known as Cerberus), and literally meaning the invisible or the unseen, for that is the role of the alpha-privative, that is, to negate whatever it is prefixed to, in this case, the idea of seeing contained in the stem -ides.
