A little boy went into a candy store and asked for a pennys worth of gumballs. The jar containing the gumballs was kept on the very top shelf, so the shopkeeper had to get a little ladder, climb up, get the jar, climb down, measure out a pennys worth, then climb back up the ladder to replace the jar. Just as he had descended the ladder, another boy came into the shop and also asked for a pennys worth of gumballs. Again the shopkeeper had to go up the ladder, down the ladder, measure out a pennys worth, and then go up and down the ladder again. In came a third boy - he also wanted a pennys worth of gumballs. And a fourth. By this time, the shopkeeper was getting exhausted, so when the fifth boy came in while he was at the top of the ladder, he said, I suppose you want a pennys worth of gumballs, too? No, I dont, said the boy. So the shopkeeper put the jar on the shelf and came down again. What DO you want then, sonny? he asked, panting hard. Two cents worth of gumballs, said the lad.
