A little commentary on this video https://youtube/watch?v=fV70uDYUqlc&list=PLw613M86o5o7q1cjb26MfCgdxJtshvRZ- We may all disagree on the geopolitics relating to the current conflict in Ukraine. We may disagree on matters of principle, and which side both law and morality behind it.. Nevertheless, the arbitrary proceedings of the so-called Peoples Courts in the areas of Ukraine currently controlled by separatist forces is painful to watch for somebody studying international law, and for any human being who in their worldview values such fundamental human rights as the right to fair judicial proceedings and the right to be heard by an impartial, independent tribunal. The current violation of these rights under the auspices of the Donetsk independence movement are more reminiscent of medieval witch trials and the Inquisition rather than an effective judicial system - the collective whole imposing arbitrary legal consequences on individuals. Not only does this go against the very idea of a rule of law based state, but this is degrading to the dignity of the human beings that are being unjustly prosecuted. My opinion stands that to be a supporter of the Russian backed insurgents in Eastern Ukraine is to be supportive of the policies of these forces, which are authoritarian, tainted with religious fundamentalism, ultra-nationalist and anti-feminist. The insurgents in Eastern Ukraine are an anathema to the idea of a democratic Europe that embraces our individual rights - not only in the realm of judicial proceedings, but in all matters of concern to us as political and social beings. Thusly, anyone supporting this movement, in my eyes, is an enemy of democracy.
