They allow for pressure and release, but arnt as bulky as the slip leads, nor as potentially a problem of loosing a dog as their regular flat collars. Since these guys are not pullers, the martingale is a great choice--if they were pull mules, I probably would have chosen a micro prong collar instead because that would protect their tracheas from direct pressure and damage that you see in the typical gagging and coughing pulling dog.
