A little personal note from me :-) There are already reports of very heavy traffic in parts of Laurel due to the thousands of people visiting our city for the Dixie Youth Majors World Series, Dixie Youth “O”Zone World Series, and Dixie Youth AAA World Series. Never before has a city been chosen to host all three events the same year, and we salute our community on this outstanding accomplishment. The City of Laurel is expected to have between 12,000 and 14,000 guests from several states from as far away as Virginia and Texas the next several days. To put that in perspective, it would be like taking a couple thousand more than the population of the City of Petal and placing each of its citizens in Laurel with no additional infrastructure or businesses. This event will have a significant economic impact on our community. Money will benefit not only businesses, but will also help the City of Laurel provide services that won’t have to be paid for by local taxpayers. We urge our local folks to please be patient and kind whether driving, eating at restaurants, visiting businesses, or filling up with gasoline. We also urge business leaders to make sure employees are kind and patient with our guests, and customers to be kind and patient with restaurant servers, retail clerks, and other people working to serve while under amazing stress. There are hundreds of our law enforcement and emergency services people, volunteers, parks and recreation city workers, hosts, and others working outside during this heat for the next few days. Besides the special plans for publications during the World Series, we have also taken steps to be sure our high-traffic property on 16th Avenue is clean with a new American Flag, lawn manicured, and trash picked up. We urge others to help keep Laurel clean and welcoming during this very unique opportunity to really showcase our community.
