A little story here to go with this article: Working in the ER one - TopicsExpress

A little story here to go with this article: Working in the ER one night we had a drunken late middle aged man brought in with an amputated ring finger. He had gotten into a drunken fight and in an effort to force his way back into the home from which had been expelled (I was not his) he had shoved his hand in the door; the home owner had slammed to door upon it crushing his fingers the one with the ring had been amputated by both the force of the door and the metal of the ring being crushed. While that finger had been retrieved at the scene it had been twisted by the force of the door slamming and crushed beyond recognition as being a finger. Even if it had been iced there was no viable potential to reattach that finger. The drunk immediately began to lambast the Orthopedist I had called in treat him and me for not reattaching his finger. Suffice to say this gentleman loved booze more than having a job, health insurance or even keeping friends and he demanded we reattach the finger; saying, he was going sue us. I was so scared! (Do I have to verify this is sarcasm?) Rather than listen to his threats I decided to lay reality out for this delusional moron. Are you a concert pianist or musician that can no longer play without the finger? Are you a neuro-surgeon that has to have full dexterity to save lives or even fingers? Are you even a typist that might have to adapt to not easily typing Oh and Oops in your manuscripts or is it you just think you need that finger to hold your booze as you decimate the rest of your body with it? What if anything has that finger done to serve humanity, that makes it so vital to reattach it? Moreover, what have you ever done that we should be taking our time to insure that you dont get an infection, that you will have use of the other fingers, even your hand and your not in excruciating pain while it heals? Most importantly, what are you going to do after this; after this huge investment of time, effort and money, just for you? Are you going to do something for humanity or just stay drunk? I cant even justify what we have done right now; let alone sending you up to Stanford for what will be nonviable Micro surgery. (He had kept insisting that we had to try.) He of course left with the police and perhaps awoke no wiser than when he left the ER but I was given some grief about being so honest to him, by some of the staff. my reply shocked them all: I do not respond to demands when I do triage. That was precisely what I was doing with that drunk, I saw him as non-viable. This same triage could be applied to the Ferguson Case; we have all heard the Grand Jury Investigation and it would seem that there is little or no reason to indict the Police Officer for anything in the instance. Still, Barry is urging protesters to stay on course, to keep protesting what for all intents and purposes, seems to be an un-viable indictment. Sounds a lot like another drunk making impossible demands, to me. examiner/article/obama-met-with-ferguson-activists-concerned-protests-stay-on-course
