A lot of people in my news feed lately have been going on about how bad spanking is for kids, and how it wrecks kids lives, etc. Apparently this has something to do with football, which I find problematic. The sport is essentially a celebration of physical violence. So condemning violence against kids in the context of football fandom...I dont know. Anyway, of course its bad to hit kids. I agree, despite the often elitist tone of the arguments: You barbarians! Havent you read the research? Youre not winning hearts and minds, here. Youre alienating people, I promise. Youre encouraging anti-intellectualism. Have a sense of rhetorical purpose, if not moral consistency. More to the point, among the ways our culture DESTROYS children, spanking probably does not rank in the top ten. Maybe we could talk about how working people are essentially *required* to abandon their kids to the care of strangers, or about how unmitigated poverty hollows out kids future chances, or about how our education system has been so eviscerated at this point that human excellence occurs only as an accident, like a tree growing in a sidewalk crack. Or how our entire culture is practically designed to poison and derail childrens minds into a mindless, heartless materialism. We could talk about the death of art; the death of empathy; the death of community. But youre right. Of course youre right.
