A meeting will take place to celebrate the 1st birthday of the squat in #Kadıköy #Turkey -Caferağa Mahalle Evi- tomorrow at 16:00 at Mehmet Ayvalıtaş Meydanı. On 9th December they came in the early morning to destroy the rooms that grew in the last eleven months and shut the house.. More than one year ago ideas of community life and communal organization stayed with many of us after we gathered to stand together for the last spots of nature in the concrete city. The movement settled down in our neighbourhood as Caferağa Dayanışması with regular forums to discuss political questions and approach local issues. As winter came we decided to open up a community house, used by everyone, owned by no one. When we found that abandoned building in Hacı Şükrü Sokak it had stood empty for years, waiting to be replaced by something more profit-yielding. With the work and inspirations of hundreds of people it was transformed into a place to have a tea, swap your clothes in the free market and get to know your neighbours. Created by the people who use it, open to everyone who enters it, organized by those who care about it. It has been home to free yoga workshops and discussion rounds, meetings to criticize patriarchy and free exhibitions. And always good for a chat and a çay. For its anniversary we will bring some life to our Mahalle Evi again! Come and celebrate with us to look back on one year of skillsharing, connecting and actions in our house, as well as to make plans about the future.
