A message from Graham Steele: Friends, last week New Brunswick’s Telegraph Journal published an editorial called “Learn from Nova Scotia” that stated: "With New Brunswick’s economy flat and employment in decline, members of the provincial government must be asking themselves “What do we do next?” Why not look more closely at what Nova Scotia is doing? It’s economic development and cost cutting initiatives have been more successful than New Brunswick’s." Four years ago we New Democrats were starting to tackle the deficit left behind by Rodney MacDonald. The Liberals in New Brunswick were finalizing a desperate deal to sell NB Power to Hydro-Quebec. As a result, New Brunswick recently raised income tax by 33% in an effort to balance its budget by 2016-2017. Its unemployment rate, which was lower than ours four years ago, is now 20% higher. Make no mistake, had Stephen McNeil and the Liberals had the chance we’d be in the same boat today in Nova Scotia. Fortunately Nova Scotians didn’t make that choice. As a result... - June was our sixth month in a row of stable or increasing employment. - The number of people living in low-income households is declining. - And, the Dominion Bond Rating Service gave our province its highest long-term credit rating ever; the result of the NDP’s efforts to balance the budget. Returning to a Liberal government is too big a risk for today’s families. Yours truly, Graham Steele.
