A militant commander managed his escape during a night- long encounter in Ahmednagar area on Srinagar outskirts. Four policemen including a middle- rung officer were injured during the gunfight. The residents of the area accused the armed forces of harassing them while the encounter was on, a charge denied by police. On specific information about the presence of a militant, the Special Operation Group of J& K Police and Central Reserve Police Force ( CRPF) launched a cordon and search operation in Ahmednagar around 7 pm on Wednesday. A source said while conducting searches, the search party was attacked with grenades and volley of gunshots at around 9.30 pm by the suspected militant. “ In the first burst and due to grenades, four policemen including a Special Police Official and an Assistant Sub- Inspector ( ASI) were injured,” a police official said here. He said that soon after the grenade and exchange of fire, a smoke grenade was lobbed towards the building were the militant was hiding. “ After lobbing the smoke grenade, there was no retaliation,” he said. The official said after two hours, there was more firing. “ The firing continued till 3 am and the militant took the advantage of darkness and managed his escape from the spot,” the official said, adding through searches were carried but to no avail. “ Later the cordon in the area was withdrawn,” he said. Inspector General of Police ( Kashmir Zone), Abdul Ghani Mir said, “ We used less force for minimizing the collateral damage,” he said. The residents of the area however accused forces of harassment and said they were ordered to stay indoors till 9 am on Thursday. “ The forces used pepper gas and caused lot of inconvenience to the people, especially aged ones,” said a local resident. He said as soon as the cops disembarked from vehicles Wednesday evening, the locals were ordered to close down their shops and stay indoors.
