Conf: (106) Poetry --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I read with interest your comment to Vince on the use of profanity in poetry. I agree with you strongly and would like to add a couple pf thoughts of my own. First, is that strong language is like a powerful spice - say like cayenne pepper. Ocassionally the use of profanity can give weight and powerful emphasis to something. But its affect is in relation to the degree of contrast to the normal tone. Too much and you have a plate full of pepper. Not very appealing. Second, the suggested image is often more powerful than something explicitly stated. Profanity or obscenity is too often used to immitate strength in something that actually has little weight. I would like to see some of your poems. Perhaps you have posted some but I have missed them. Your age is not an issue as far as I am concerned. I know a number of poets under 20 that are writing wonderful things - beautiful, sensitive, powerful things. The worst seem to be inspired mostly by heavy metal lyrics. Usually, however, use of so-called forbidden words is a Gee, thats interesting finding someone talkin bout my poems! Glad you liked it, since I didnt get many positive replies (actually 0). Honestly, I thought that it didnt get received because no one said anything - youll be happy, I just reposted it in the *** version.... Im zapping out the words with ***, but I guess that doesnt do the job still. About H*ll, I tend to abuse the word because it holds a slightly different meaning to myself, a Jew. I agree with you that its not good when people start getting stuck up on darkness, violence, and swearing. My excuse is that I only write when Im in a BAD mood, and when Im in a good mood I am never near a computer nor pencil. Anyways, why spoil a good time by pullin out a pad of paper? So dont think that Im too stuck up, as my poems show me being. I liked the explanation of vulgar - that has power unto itself. As in BIPOLAr(BEAR) it was designed to show a more simplistic person, in fury, violent and ticked off as the Devil with 7 horns and 9 tails. ... Effective immediately, Michael Socko has been appointed temporary moderator of the Poetry Conference. Michael will be enforcing all Intelec Rules and Guidelines. The temporary status will remain until such time as a permanent replacement can be found. The Poetry Conference is being given 30 days to comply with all Intelec Rules and Guidelines. On May 1, 1993, if the Intelec Administration feels that the Poetry Conference participants are still not following the Rules and Guidelines, this conference will cease to exist on Intelec. The main issue that prompted this official action is the repeated abuse of profanity and vulgarity in this conference. Intelec Rules and Guidelines clearly state: Flaming, vulgarity and/or libelous statements are grounds for removal. This includes the usage of profanity within messages on Intelec. Intelec does not want to censor any thoughts, ideas or text of messages UNLESS the content does not comply with the Rules and Guidelines. Several participants have mentioned that by eliminating vulgarities and profanity from their messaging, that we are violating their Freedom of Speech. On that issue, the Rules and Guidelines state: Intelec is operated as a public service of Intelec Business Network Inc and Intelec Online serves as the Net Host BBS. The Network is run by the Administration, Cliff Watkins, who is also the SysOp of Intelec Online and the President of Intelec Business Network, Inc. But while Intelec operates as a public service, it is NOT a public access net- work. We are a private network thus the rules of operation that have been set forth in this document supercede any and all rights set forth outside of this document. Therefore, Freedom of Speech cannot be used as an argument for justifying the breaking of Intelecs Rules and Guidelines, as Intelec is a private network. The full text of Intelecs Rules and Guidelines are always available to any Intelec participant. The files name is IN-XXXX.ZIP, where XXXX is the year and month. The most current file would be IN-9304.ZIP. If your local system does not have this file, ask your Sysop to obtain it for you. Previous editions of this file are no longer in effect. If anyone wishes to discuss this administrative action, you are invited to move this to Intelecs fully public Net Admin conference. Messages concerning this action will *not* continue in the Poetry Conference. All inquiries will be responded to with a response in Net Admin, so it would be in your best interest to move the message there to start with.
