A mothers wait to sleep - Its always amazing how a mother always knows. But they do. A mama always knows when her little bears are ill or angry or sad or tired and this mama was no exception. She had her little ones that she watched over. For this story, we will call them; son 1 and son 2. On this day, neither of them were happy. The times had changed. Mama always used to wait to sleep when her little cubs were young. There was dinner time and then there was bath time and then there was story time and finally, time for sleep for her two little cubs, son 1 and son 2. Thats always how it is for mamas. They rest after their little ones fall asleep. Of course there are things to do after a mothers cubs are asleep. Theres cleaning and theres lunches for tomorrow and then theres buttoning up the house to make sure no monsters can get in and hurt the cubs. It always seems like a mothers wait to sleep is never ending. So I guess it should be no surprise that on this particular day, a lifetime of moons later, this mother bear was waiting. She sat with her cubs as she prepared for a trip. Her bags were packed and her travel time was near, but her heart was heavy. Son 1 and son 2 were older now. They lived very far away. But when their mother announced her journey, her two little cubs travelled home. Neither son was ready to say goodbye to his mother. What son ever is? But their mother was tired and ready to explore a new world. A place where the beauty of the world never disappears. A place where the beauty of a rainstorm is never to be feared, only to be embraced. The sun never burns you, it only warms your soul. The chill of autumn is only a reminder of the winter to come. Its ok, though. In this world, you never freeze and youre never really cold. So the snowfall asks you to do nothing, but to look around and enjoy. To look out the window and see the clean fresh look of new snow as you snuggle inside by the fire with a hot cup of cocoa. In this world, travel to the beach is but a thought, unless its the thought of the travel you like. You can feel the grains of sand slip through your toes and hear the ocean as it performs its symphony of life. So many places to explore. So many dreams to fulfill. So many lifetimes to live. But the journey is always on a one way train. With tracks that have no beginning and the destination is always a mystery. The tracks always lead into the sun. Sometimes a setting sun, sometimes a full sun, but on the day this mama was to catch her train, the train would roll into the rising sun. But before she could go, she had to make sure son 1 and son 2 would be ok. As they waited for the train, the cubs, now grown, became anxious and tired. They werent ready for their mama to go. They wanted to make sure that their mama was ok and that she got on the train. So they stayed awake, for as long as they could. As they did, something happened. Mamas phone started ringing. She had calls from people she hadnt seen in a long time. The cubs waited patiently, so as not to interrupt mama on a phone call. You never want to interrupt mama on a phone call. As she talked on the phone, she became settled with the trip she would soon be taking. Now she knew that there would be others, who had taken this journey before her, waiting on her arrival. When the last phone call was done, there was son 1 and son 2. Waiting. Waiting for their mama. Waiting with their mama. Waiting to make sure she got on the train. But now, it was waaaay past the cubs bedtime. Even a grown bear is still a cub to his mama. So before she could go on her journey, she would once more....wait to sleep. As son 2 faded in and out, son 1 held on. Theres always the one little stinker that doesnt want to go to sleep! Sometimes, a mothers curse, but on this day, a mothers love. Both of her bears were there to see her on her way. What mother could ask for more. Finally, son 1 could wait no more. He put his head down and quickly went to sleep. Her two bears were finally at rest. She looked them over one last time. She tucked them in and gave them the kiss. The perfect kiss that only a mother can give. The kiss that ensures that her little ones dreams will be sweet and their sleep will be restful. With a tender kiss for son 1 and son 2, the mother bear had to wait for sleep no more. As she lay in bed, the conductor came. She handed him her ticket. There was no need for him to punch it. Her seat was guaranteed. He escorted her to a seat next to a window and the train rolled off into the rising sun. A story by Roland Hanes .
