A new era for China Airlines has arrived with the addition of the Boeing 777-3000ER jet. The cabin interior created by Taiwanese architect, Ray Chen, takes on a new approach by applying Song dynasty-inspired design cues to merge traditional elements with modern amenities. Upon entering the cabin, the eyes are drawn to the persimmon wood grain décor, which is the first usage of wood textures in the aviation industry. To provide a personalized feel in the cabin, LED mood lighting can be adjusted to create a unique seasonal and/or festive mood for holidays such as Christmas or New Year’s. The bathroom walls are decorated with sketches of mountain and river landscapes. The minimalist vertical lines of the sketches complement the persimmon wood grain in the cabin and originate from the succinct lines of traditional Chinese calligraphy. Broadening the visual horizon, the new cabin design allows passengers to enjoy the comforts of space. The premium business class section is beautifully designed in the Sky Lounge style, full of sophistication and fun. The Song Dynasty poet, Lu You, put it best when he wrote a poem about resting places of ancient travelers, which is what China Airlines is doing for modern travelers today. There are also two other poems that embodies how modern travelers search for a new perspectives: Wang Wei’s poem named “Sitting While Looking at Clouds,” and a poem from Marcel Proust, a French poet who says that “The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” In this living space that brings together Eastern and Western cultural philosophy, there is a cultural tea area on the left, which includes Charcoal Aroma Dong-Ding Oolong Tea, Ali Mountain Oolong tea, Light-Aroma Shan-Lin Xi Oolong Tea, Light-Aroma Li Mountain Tea, Oriental Beauty Tea, and Sun-Moon Lake Black Tea. On the right is the “Fashionable Coffee Area”, which includes coffees from international beans as well as local Taiwan beans from Dongshan. Traditional tea snacks, such as green bean cake and pineapple cake are also provided for foreign passengers to enjoy the tastes of Taiwan. The bookshelf-like space on the two sides of Sky Lounge provides a selection of Chinese and English books of the month, which immerses busy passengers in a relaxing setting of literature and taste. On-board will include Taiwan’s first in-seat communication system in three languages: Chinese, English, or Japanese. The social networking function called “Seat Chat”, allows passengers on the same flight to message one another. Passengers can also surf the web or social media by using Wi-Fi service charged at USD$11.95 for one hour, USD$16.95 for 3 hours, and USD$21.95 for 24 hours. China Airlines’ Boeing 777-300ERs can carry 358 passengers across three cabins – 40 seats in Premium Business class, 62 seats in Premium Economy class, and 256 in Economy class. Each premium business class seat will get an industry first 18-inch video screen and a desk lamp that helps transform the cabin into a study. In addition, each Premium Business class seat will feature 180-degree recliners that total 198 cm in length and come with premium and stylish fleece in a yellow mustard, indigo violet color design. The in-flight meal dining wares are designed by Chen Chun-Liang, a well-known designer and a nominee for the prestigious “Eastern Nobel Award,” more formally known as the Tang Award. The artistic plates and bowls are made from porcelain and feature elements referenced from 3000 historical pieces from the Sung (plate), Yuan (bowl), and Qing (porcelain) dynasties. China Airlines’ new stylish in-flight dining ware is a unique fusion of Chinese culture and modern aesthetics. China Airlines will launch its first-ever Premium Economy class, which features extended legroom of 39 inches or 100 centimeters. The fixed backshell design allows a passenger to recline without affecting the passenger directly behind. In Economy Class, seatbacks are thinner and recline to almost 120 degrees, giving passengers more legroom. The seat features an understated jet black tone and a Song Dynasty print, representing both cutting-edge technology and refined culture. 30 red stamp colored seats are also randomly placed in each row, giving the cabin a livelier feel. The “Family Couch” is also another highlight in Economy Class. China Airlines is the first airline authorized to use Air New Zealand’s design to turn three seats into one flat 180-degree flexible space. The Family Couch zone is located in up front in Economy Class on the right side of the plane, with 10 rows allocated and each row comprised of 3 seats. The Family Couch seats include leg rests that rise up 90 degrees as well as specially made safety belts, pillows, and blankets that can easily convert seats into a bed. China Airlines will introduce a total of 10 Boeing 777-300ER passenger aircraft to its fleet, starting with 3 aircraft in 2014 and the rest by 2016.Including the 3 new planes in 2014, China Airlines will have a total of 83 planes. Including the 8 planes from Mandarin Airlines, and 1 from Tigerair Taiwan, the total aircraft number for the China Airlines’ group comes to 92. Currently, the Boeing 777-300ER will initially fly regional routes, including Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Hanoi. By December, there will be 2 flights daily to Los Angeles. By February of next year, the New York route will start, followed by the San Francisco route in September.
