A note to Matt Walsh, whose blog I just unfortunately read and is currently making me very, very angry: If you admit up front that you cant comprehend why people commit suicide, stop right there and do not bull on with your own, uneducated opinions. You cant understand the refusal to see the beauty in life? Try inability. Of all the things depression robs you of, the ability to see beauty and happiness in life is the worst. You cant see it. Can. Not. See it. You cant understand the rejection of life? Try the feeling that life has rejected you. That you are no longer a participant in life. You cant understand why people would saddle their family and friends with the heartache of their loss? Try feeling like your family and friends might miss you in the short term, but your continued existence would cause them greater pain in the long run. Suicide is a choice? Yes, it is. A choice that is made under duress, by a mind that is no longer working properly. I never told my family this, though I think some of them may have guessed, but I got as far as suicidal ideation in my depression. Basically, that means thinking, Id never actually commit suicide, but if I did, this is how Id do it, and running simulations in your head. Fortunately, it scared me enough that I reached out for help. More fortunately, help was available for me. Not everyone is so fortunate. Robin Williams sought help many times in his life. He finally reached a point where he felt there was no help left for him, no hope. Ive never been there, but Ive been in the neighborhood. It hurts, it hurts like nerve pain. If you dont understand suicide or depression, shut up. Just listen. Listen.
